Gaming has come a long way since the old days of green tunnels,
and side scrolling balls of flame. In fact, you could say that gaming in
the present days, is something completely different than the old two
button games we use to slobber over in the 90's. From first person
shooters, to world domination, our entertainment is now massive, yet
human patience and attention spans have diminished to the smallest of
proportions. Even though gaming is now in a realm of being bigger and
greater than anything in the past, it still exists within a 15 second
time frame.
What does this mean? Instead of having to work through the first few hours of a game before actually finding conclusive action (thank you Zelda), gaming now allows anyone to become fully immersed within the game in seconds. This is done by video game publishers on purpose, in order to make sure they never lose the attention of the person playing the game (or anyone watching really). The benefits of this are instant, entertainment comes quick and we're left with a wow factor that will stand out in our minds as a very magical moment.
The bad (there always has to be 'a bad') games have now lost their ability to withstand the test of time. Instead of having a game that you can play over and over for years to come, you are left with a game that has lost its oomph within the first year of purchase. This is why companies like Activision/EA are making sure that you have the ability to buy a new game in the series each year. They understand that what they are giving you is going to become obsolete in 365 days. That means more money for them. If they made games that lasted years on end, then it would ultimately mean less money for them. And in the world of commerce, just like the light bulb, most companies who make mainstream things (that last), go out of business first.
Here's the thing, I'm not going to argue that games 'are not' getting better and better. I just have this feeling that we, as gamers, have lost something that we use to have when playing the old strategy and thinking games of the past. And I will say that some current games such as Starcraft and certain Massive Multiplayer games have just as much intensity and mind bending problems to solve as the old Final Fantasy games or Super Marios. However, the games that I see standing out of the crowd are usually short lived fantasies, only to be replaced with the next new and improved graphical, violent, or imaginative Triad.
